I have been a freelance technical writer and editor for over a dozen years. I enjoy the freedom of freelance work because it allows me to work from anywhere with the freedom to work for a variety of employers on different types of projects. What sets me apart as a freelancer is my professionalism, emphasis on deadline management, attention to detail and strong technical writing skill set. Most importantly, I enjoy my work and love to tackle new and interesting projects.
As you will see on my resume, I have worked in the publishing industry for over ten years. I spent most of those years working for a major craft publisher and the remaining years as a freelance writer in the craft industry. As I continue my freelancecareer, I am seeking a wider variety of writing and editing opportunities. The collection of writings I have included here show an offering of the writing of which I am capable.
In presenting these pieces I hope to convey who I am as a writer. These writing examples show my strong background in technical writing and editing which I have used as a springboard to explore in different genres and styles and experiment with new technologies. They will also show my ability for information design, or presenting information in a way that is more efficient, effective and most importantly more easily understood by the audiencI hope they show that I thrive in problem solving situations, and enjoy the challenges of staying on top of new technologies. What you may not see from this collection is my ability to work well as a part of a collaboration as well as independently.
I have included six different pieces in this portfolio, a document design example, an indexing example, an instructional writing example, a personal writing example, a persuasive example and finally two research pieces. I chose these pieces because they showcase my diversity as a writer. It is true that each one of these writing examples is non-fiction, but they vary in their different genres, like formal, informal, research, instructional and even satirical. Each was written in consideration of their specific audience and discourse community.
The document design example shows my software proficiency as well my page layout skills, choosing typeface, color and content. The indexing example highlights my ability to properly index, organize and format a large text. The instructional writing example exhibits my proficiency in technical writing for the craft discourse community. The personal writing sample showcases my willingness for rhetorical exploration and the persuasive piece highlights a lighter side of Aristotelian-founded persuasive writing. Finally, the research examples exhibit my ability to build a paper through extensive research, and a proficiency in presentation writing.
The breadth of my work is far greater than the few items I have chosen to include here. I chose to include pieces that give an indication of my skills and show the variety of work of which I am capable. If you are looking for a skill set that is not included here or require further information please feel free to contact me utilizing the "contact me" tab of the portfolio.
Thank you,
Lindsay W. Glenn
