Instructional Writing
Below is an example of a piece of instructional writing, written as a part of my freelance work for a yarn company.
My process for writing these instructional pieces is generally the same. First, I receive the designer's original instructions along with photographs of the model or they will mail me the actual piece. Then, I write the instructions, using the designer's notes and the piece as a guide, so they are repeatable for any audience, keeping in mind the rules and guidelines for the discourse community in which I am writing. Finally, I submit my final file to the client, and they format it for the web or print.
I chose to include this piece because knit and crochet writing has been the heart of my freelance work and professional technical writing work since before I began my masters. Technically writing and editing craft patterns is the work in which I have the largest breadth of experience and where I am most comfortable. I chose this pattern in particular because it includes the largest variety of elements as far as pattern writing is concerned. Because of the variety of elements, shaping, multiple sizes, and pattern complexity, I believe this pattern showcases my skill set.
The example below is my final edit for the client. To view the formatted file with professional photography included, click the link below.
