This piece is a personal piece written for a non-fiction assignment. The intention of the assignment was to step outside of our rhetorical comfort zone. For me, that was trying something with a different style that felt somewhat artistic. A few months before I wrote this piece I had read Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt. I was intrigued what he did stylistically with that piece, his lack of punctuation and the informal tone. With McCourt's book in mind, I was inspired to experiment with the style and tone of this piece, intertextuality at its best.
Since I have spent a lifetime writing in a more mechanical fashion, composing this piece was way out on a limb for me. The subject matter is also very personal, a diary of my thoughts from the very beginning of my pregnancy and then ending with the birth of my baby. Needless to say, my professor was wholly unimpressed. For him this piece was unoriginal, hard to follow and didn't leave the audience with a message. I decided to include this piece in my portfolio because it shows a side of my writing that isn't ordinary and that I am proud of, regardless of the feedback. As a writer, having the strength to venture outside your comfort zone is more than half the battle.
Whenever I read this piece I am reminded of Walter Fisher's theory of narrative paradigm. Is all human communication storytelling? This piece is definitely a good example. Below is the second version of this piece including revisions as per my professor. A link to my original is below.
