Index Writing
I truly enjoy indexing because it is very black and white. At the beginning of the process you establish a baseline dependent on the guidelines received from the client on the depth of the final index and of course, on the discourse community. Then, you simply work your way through the text, following and tweaking your baseline as necessary. For me indexing is a very comfortable rhetorical genre. I find it similar to putting together puzzle, you have the final picture to work from, you just need to fill in all the individual pieces.
Below is an example of an indexing piece. This index was created referencing three chapters of a culinary text book as a final project for an indexing class. I chose to include this piece because I think it is a good example of my indexing skills and I am quite proud of it. The depth of the indexing along with the complexity of the text are a fine example of my indexing capabilities. I have spend a very brief period in my professional and educational pursuits on indexing and am hopeful that I will be able to spend more time in this genre in the future.

Below is a copy of the design memo that accompanied this index. In it you will find the design decisions I made in completing the final index.
